EA Sports which is the maker of the game is having open voting on ESPN.com where the fans can choose who they want to be on cover. Voting ends on April 25 where the winner will be annouced on SportsNation.
The field started with 32 players that included Julius Peppers, Calvin Johnson, Patrick Willis, Maurice Jones-Drew, and fan favorite Danny Woodhead. Many players consider being on the cover of Madden as a honor. The people that play Madden think different.
There is a urban legend regarding the Madden cover and the player who is placed on it. Since 2001 when Eddie George was the first NFL player to be on the cover of Madden, there has been a so called curse that has gone along with being on the cover of the game. The player that is selected to be on the cover will suffer a bad season or possibly a severe injury.
A couple of examples of this curse are:
- In 2001, Eddie George had a good year but fumbled in the playoffs as his top seeded team lost in the 1st game against the Ravens.
- In 2004, Michael Vick fractured his fibula in the preseason which kept him out of the season.
- In 2006, Donovan McNabb suffered a sports hernia early in the season and missed seven games.
- in 2010, Troy Polamalu/Larry Fitzgerald were the first duo to be on the cover. Fitzgerald went on to have another good year but Polamalu only played a few games due to knee injuries.
It is a great honor to be on the cover but there are consequences to it. Players don't believe in the curse but it is hard to deny its existence. In 2007 LaDainian Tomlinson turned down the opportunity to be on the cover. Now Tomlinson has said that the reason for turning the offer down was due to the financial reasons but some have to wonder if the "Madden curse" didn't have a small part in his decision. Time will tell if this curse will continue.

Damn great post Grip! And I have no clue, but I do know that unless it's a defensive player, whoever is selected, I am not drafting his ass in fantasy.

Stay away from any player on the cover. I tell you the curse is alive and well. My vote is for Frank Gore! He would look great on the cover. lol
I agree the curse is serious business. I'm a Texans fan and will be drafting 12 out of 14 in my fantasy league, so I will have no shot at him, therefore my vote for the cover is Peyton Manning.
I vote for Sam Bradford. =)~
Rogers or Vick, mostly cuz I want them to get the curse!
