You're too smart to play Football?

"Alabama's QB Greg McElroy scored a 48 out of a possible 50 on the Wonderlic test," as I read that headline I thought, cool nice to see there are still intelligent athletes.

But, after completely reading the article I was a bit dumbfounded by how a high score could potentially be perceived as a bad thing in the NFL......

Mike Florio explains:

That said, scoring too high can be as much of a problem as scoring too low.  Football coaches want to command the locker room. Being smarter than the individual players makes that easier. Having a guy in the locker room who may be smarter than every member of the coaching staff can be viewed as a problem — or at a minimum as a threat to the egos of the men who hope to be able when necessary to outsmart the players, especially when trying in some way to manipulate them.

This is pretty absurd if you ask me.  Sad, really.  To think that coaches out there only want people dumber than them is pretty jaw dropping.  I hope it all works out for Greg.

Mike Florio is an idiot. That's why he's a writer and not a coach. Manning is uber smart and everybody loves him for it. Actually, a coach should want somebody that smart - it makes him look smarter than he likely is.
